January 2018 Quarterly Meeting: Update on MAG Alignment/Merger with MS Center for Nonprofits; Update on Nonprofit Innovations Lab

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE IN MEETING LOCATION

Please join us at the next MAG quarterly membership meeting at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 12, 2018, at the new Museum of Mississippi History and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum at 222 North Street in Jackson, MS. The program will focus on the potential alignment/merger of MAG with the Mississippi Center for Nonprofits and the development of a Nonprofit Innovations Lab that seeks to align the interests of grantmakers and nonprofits to more effectively address community needs in Mississippi.

For more than a year, the boards of the Mississippi Association of Grantmakers and the Mississippi Center for Nonprofits have been working to visualize what a potential alignment and/or merger of the two organizations might look like, and how that alignment/merger would better serve the efforts of philanthropy and nonprofits to meet critical needs across Mississippi. In January, we will provide MAG and MCN members an update on the status of that work.

Also, last year MAG, in partnership with the Mississippi Center for Nonprofits and the Social Science Research Center at Mississippi State University, conducted a statewide survey of grantmakers and nonprofits to explore existing relationships between philanthropies and nonprofits, and to assess perceived strengths and challenges they face. The resulting report, Two Sides of the Same Coin, found wide gaps in perceptions between grantmakers and nonprofits in terms of operational capacity and effectiveness, and a commonly perceived need for better communication and alignment.

Over the past year, MAG has worked with the Mississippi Center for Nonprofits (MCN) to develop the concept of a Nonprofits Innovations Lab, through which grantmakers would work hand in hand with nonprofits to improve the capacity and effectiveness of Mississippi’s nonprofit sector in serving the people and communities of our state.

At our January membership meeting, consultant Nancy Perret, the consultant facilitating this process, will engage MAG and MCN members in a discussion of the concept paper for the Lab to gain additional input into how best to build the capacity and effectiveness of the nonprofit sector in Mississippi, and better align the approaches of funders and nonprofits in addressing local needs.

The meeting will also provide updates on MAG’s work with the Endow Mississippi initiative and the Mississippi Campaign for Grade Level Reading, as well as expansion of content on MAG’s website.

Lunch will be served. The meeting will close at 2:00 P.M.

April 2018 Quarterly Meeting:

The spring quarterly MAG membership meeting, which also serves as our annual meeting, will feature David Dodson, President of MDC, who will discuss “Philanthropy as the South’s Passing Gear: Fulfilling the Promise”, a report commissioned by the Southeastern Council of Foundations. This publication reviews what has changed in our region in terms of data, landscape and philanthropic capacity and activities since MDC’s first “State of the South” report in 2007.

This meeting will be held from 11am to 2pm on Friday, April 13, 2018, at the Mississippi State University’s CAVS Extension Center, 153 Mississippi Parkway, Canton, MS.
